Southern California's huge wildfire roared to life again Tuesday in a mountain wilderness area. But in a sign of significant progress against the blaze, more neighbourhoods were reopened to thousands of residents who fled last week. A massive plume rose suddenly at midmorning in the Santa Monica Mountains near the community of Lake Sherwood, prompting authorities to send numerous aircraft to drop fire retardant and water on the blaze. Forecasters had warned of ongoing fire danger because of persistent Santa Ana winds, the withering, dry gusts that sweep out of the interior toward the coast, pushing back moist ocean breezes. But except for an apartment building that burned overnight in coastal Malibu, there was little sign of fire activity elsewhere in the vast fire zone west of Los Angeles. Officials tempered optimism with caution, saying there were hot spots and pockets of unburned vegetation. "We are not out of the woods yet. We still have some incredibly tough conditions ahead of us," Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen said. The death toll from the Woolsey fire stood at two - a pair of adults found last week in a car overtaken by flames. They have not been identified. The number of homes and other structures destroyed had reached 435. Damage assessments were continuing, with crews having to gain access to canyon areas on foot. "That number is going to rise significantly," Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby said. Residents who stayed behind in coastal communities that were cut off by road closures were getting supplies by boat. Gas, food, baby wipes and horse pellets were among the items brought ashore in the Paradise Cove area of Malibu. Just as October Wildfires recovery in the Sonoma and Napa areas were hitting their stride, the Thomas Fire blew up, quickly engulfing tens of thousands of acres of land, homes by the hundreds and sparking numerous other fires, all of which burned and threatened more land and homes, displacing tens of thousands of residents and visitors alike from Ventura County to San Diego. In this edition of Inside Look, Cal OES gives you an update on the status of the Thomas Fire, now the fourth largest wildfire in California’s history, as well as how crucial the mutual aid system is in protecting lives and property and how it works, and the role the Wireless Emergency Alert system played in getting thousands of people out of harm's way.

Google search https://tinyurl.com/ycudgqtt About two-thirds of the city of Malibu was ordered evacuated early Friday as a ferocious Southern California's wildfire roared toward the beachside community that is home for many Hollywood celebrities. The Los Angeles County Fire Department tweeted that the fire raging through the Santa Monica Mountains was headed to the ocean. Malibu has about 13,000 residents and lies along 21 miles (34 kilometers) of the coast at the southern foot of the mountain range. "Imminent threat!" the department said in its warning. The erupted Thursday near the northwest corner of the city of Los Angeles as the region's notorious Santa Ana winds gusted, triggering overnight evacuations of an estimated 75,000 homes in western Los Angeles County and eastern Ventura County. The fire then pushed southward, jumped the wide U.S. 101 freeway before dawn Friday and pushed into the Santa Monica range. Another fire was burning farther west in Ventura County, also moving toward the ocean. The latest update for Stevens County -http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/database/index.php?pageid=event_map&edis_id=WF-20181110-65385-USA A wildfire that broke out early Friday morning near Stevens Canyon did not get out of hand, and fire crews contained it to one acre, a fire official said. Firefighters from Santa Clara County and the California Department of Forestry responded just before 8:30 a.m. to the fire near the 1700 block of Stevens Canyon, Information Specialist and spokeswoman Louisa Rapport of the Santa Clara County Fire Department said An aircraft made one drop of retardant to help stop the spread of the fire, she said. The fire did not damage any property. The fire broke out about 90 minutes after a red-flag warning for bad fire conditions in the Bay Area expired.

Raging wildfires across California have killed at least five people and driven 157,000 people from their homes, fire officials said Friday. Near Los Angeles, the affluent beachside town of Malibu was ordered evacuated as a wind-driven blaze jumped the U.S. 101 Freeway and raced toward the sea. In Northern California's Butte County, the sheriff's office said investigators found five people dead in vehicles that were torched by the flames of a ferocious wildfire that roared through the town of Paradise. The victims were found in the same area of the devastated retirement community that also lost some 2,000 structures. "A whole town was wiped out in 24 hours," Rocklin Police officer Jon Gee said. "It's crazy." In Southern California, some 75,000 homes were ordered evacuated in Ventura and Los Angeles counties, with the Los Angeles County Fire Department tweeting: "imminent threat." Ventura County Fire Department Captain Scott Dettorre warned that as the Woolsey Fire crossed the famous Highway 101, a major transportation artery, “it will make its historic and typical run all the way down Pacific Coast Highway, threatening more homes, more property, more lives,” KTLA-TV reports. Fire officials ordered the evacuation of all 13,000 residents of the community, which stretches 21 miles along the coastline. "Fire is burning out of control, heading into populated areas of Malibu," the city of Malibu tweeted. "All residents evacuate now."

(9 Nov 2018) Driven by Santa Ana winds, wildfires that are sweeping across Southern California moved into Agoura Hills on Friday morning. A California fire official said six major fires were burning across the state, and characterized three of them as "critical". California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Director Ken Pimlott said on Friday that firefighters were focused on saving lives and were still rescuing people. The fire near the Northern California town of Paradise has grown to nearly 110 square miles (285 square kilometers). Another fire northwest of Los Angeles has been swept southward toward the ocean by strong Santa Ana winds. Evacuation orders were issued for residents of the beachside community of Malibu. VENTURA, Calif. -- The same vicious winds that turned three Southern California wildfires into destructive dynamos were also making the firefight more difficult. The water-dropping planes and helicopters essential to taming and containing wildfires have been mostly grounded because it's too dangerous to fly them in the strong winds. Tuesday saw gusts of over 50 mph. Commanders hoped to have them back in the air Wednesday morning, but all indications were that the winds would be whipping then too, fanning the flames that spurred evacuation orders for nearly 200,000 people, destroyed nearly 200 homes and remained mostly out control. "The prospects for containment are not good," Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen said at a news conference Tuesday. "Really, Mother Nature's going to decide when we have the ability to put it out." Southern California's so-called Santa Ana winds have long contributed to some of the region's most disastrous wildfires. They blow from the inland toward the Pacific Ocean, speeding up as they squeeze through mountain passes and canyons. The largest and most destructive of the fires, an 85-square-mile wildfire in Ventura County northwest of Los Angeles, had nearly reached the Pacific on Tuesday night after starting 30 miles inland a day earlier. The wildfire jumped a major artery, U.S. Highway 101, to a rocky beach northwest of Ventura, bringing new evacuations, though officials said the sparse population and lack of vegetation in the area meant it wasn't overly dangerous, and the highway wasn't closed. Still, caution was urged: The fire had destroyed at least 150 structures, but incident commander Todd Derum said he suspects hundreds more homes have already been lost, though firefighters have been unable to assess them. Lisa Kermode and her children returned to their home Tuesday after evacuating Monday to find their home and world in ashes, including a Christmas tree and the presents they had just bought. "We got knots in our stomach coming back up here," Kermode said. "We lost everything, everything, all our clothes, anything that was important to us. All our family heirlooms - it's not sort of gone, it's completely gone." But firefighters in Ventura were able to save a Christmas tree that had years of a family's ornaments as their mansion burned, reports CBS Los Angeles. Mansions and modest homes alike were in flames in the city. Dozens of houses in one neighborhood burned to the ground. John Keasler, 65, and his wife Linda raced out of their apartment building as the flames approached, then stood and watched the fire burn it to the ground. "It is sad," Keasler said. "We loved this place. We lost everything." Linda Keasler said they were just glad to be alive despite losing so much. "Those things we can always get back," she said. "The truth is it is just things and thank god no one died." Some 12,000 structures were under threat. A spokesman for the American Red Cross said they expected a shelter in Ventura County to be at capacity Tuesday night. Fred Mariscal says Red Cross officials expected about 400 people at the shelter Tuesday night. He said the shelter was serving meals, providing a mobile shower truck and had doctors and nurses on hand to provide medication for residents who were displaced by the wildfire. While the blazes brought echoes of the firestorm in Northern California that killed 44 people two months ago, no deaths and only a handful of injuries had been reported. In the foothills of northern Los Angeles, 30 structures burned. Mayor Eric Garcetti said the gusty winds expected to last most of the week had created a dangerous situation and he urged 150,000 people under mandatory evacuation orders to leave their homes before it's too late. "We have lost structures, we have not lost lives," he said. "Do not wait. Leave your homes." Fires aren't typical in Southern California this time of year but can break out when dry vegetation and too little rain combine with the Santa Ana winds. Hardly any measurable rain has fallen in the region over the past six months. Fires in suburban settings like these are likely to become more frequent as climate change makes fire season a year-round threat and will put greater pressure on local budgets, said Char Miller, a professor of environmental analysis at Pomona College who has written extensively about wildfires. "There are going to be far greater numbers that are going to be evacuated, as we're seeing now," Miller said. "These fires are not just fast and furious, but they're really expensive to fight." In LA County, television shows with large outdoor sets including HBO's "Westworld" and CBS's "S.W.A.T." halted production of because of worries about the safety of cast and crew. And the NFL's Los Angeles Rams, which hold workouts near the Ventura County fire, canceled practice Wednesday.

As wildfires continue to burn throughout the state of California, local Catholic Charities agencies are working with agencies in neighboring states to coordinate relief. The so-called Camp Fire in Northern California has claimed 42 lives in the town of Paradise, and has destroyed nearly 6,500 homes, making it the most destructive wildfire in the state’s history. The fire is only a quarter contained, according to the New York Times, and the local sheriff announced Sunday that nearly 230 people were still missing. At the same time, the Woolsey Fire west of Los Angeles has destroyed an estimated 370 structures and claimed two lives so far. Matt Vaughan, director of communications for Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada (CCNN), told CNA that the agency is working to gather supplies for survivors of the fires. CCNN is headquartered in Reno, Nevada, which is approximately 160 miles east of Chico, California, one of the largest cities affected by the Camp Fire. “We're trying to collect donations, which we will then send over, most likely to Chico,” Vaughan said. “It sounds like they're asking for a lot of the donations to be sent there right now, just because some of the other areas are affected [by the fire]...We have been in contact with Catholic Charities in Sacramento,” he said. “We're just really focusing on getting the really crucial, needed items over to the affected victims over there at this point...warm clothes, shoes, paper products, blankets and coats are among the most needed items right now. And that's really what we're asking the community to provide.” Yvette Myers, Chief Program Officer for CCNN, said she hopes to hear from the agency in Sacramento soon, as well as from the national branch of Catholic Charities, about the best way to deliver supplies. She said they are working jointly with a local organization to send trucks full of supplies to California, starting Nov. 16, and that they won’t know how big the truck will need to be until they begin receiving donations. “We're waiting to hear back from Sacramento...about if it's a possibility that we bring trucks to them, where they're going to go. So it's kind of a waiting game right at the moment,” Myers said. Catholic Charities USA is currently displaying a banner on their website encouraging donations for victims of the fires. “We're actually waiting to hear back from [Catholic Charities USA]...about what the plan is,” Myers said. “Their greatest needs are clothing, hygiene, blankets, coats; they can use anything, but that's what they're really asking for right now.” According to the Diocese of Reno, items that are donated that are not accepted by the donation centers in California will go to local St. Vincent’s Thrift Stores in Nevada. The Hill Fire, burning in Ventura County west of LA, is currently 90 percent contained. Daniel Grimm, Catholic Charities Regional Director for the Santa Barbara/Ventura region, told CNA that although his agency is not heavily involved with first-response relief, their assistance will be greatly needed later on, especially for the poor who are affected by the fires. “We tend to help the low-income end of the spectrum, and in a way there’s sort of a hidden impact of the disaster, but it usually takes a little longer for it to hit,” he said. “We are more handling the secondary things needed: rental assistance, help getting a new place, clothing and food...we don’t have a big ministry in emergency housing,” Grimm said. He said they have thrift stores in Ventura that provide household items for free to those who lost their homes, but he said they don’t get very many requests. “The interesting thing about this fire— and this was actually the case with the fire we had last December— almost everybody who is immediately impacted is insured and has means. So they tend not to flock to shelters,” Grimm explained. “[But] later on, we deal with low-income people who have lost their jobs from not being able to go into work because of road closures, and also tenants who have lost their rental property and need to find a new place. Often they’re not in a position to come up with a new deposit, new first month’s rent.”
