BBC4's In Our Time looks into the mystery religion Mithraism. Link to In Our Time website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01pg5nt From the website: "Melvyn Bragg and his guests discuss the cult of Mithras, a mystery religion that existed in the Roman Empire from the 1st to the 4th centuries AD. Also known as the Mysteries of Mithras, its origins are uncertain. Academics have suggested a link with the ancient Vedic god Mitra and the Iranian Zoroastrian deity Mithra, but the extent and nature of the connection is a matter of controversy. Followers of Mithras are thought to have taken part in various rituals, most notably communal meals and a complex seven-stage initiation system. Typical depictions of Mithras show him being born from a rock, enjoying food with the sun god Sol and stabbing a bull. Mithraic places of worship have been found throughout the Roman world, including an impressive example in London. However, Mithraism went into decline in the 4th century AD with the rise of Christianity and eventually completely disappeared. In recent decades, many aspects of the cult have provoked debate, especially as there are no written accounts by its members. As a result, archaeology has been of great importance in the study of Mithraism and has provided new insights into the religion and its adherents. As on December 17 we enter in the SATURNALIA... here is a tribute video to the Indo-European God Mithra (or Mithras), who was a Solar Deity devoted in the antiquity, from India to the Roman Empire through Persia. Mitra (in Vedic Sanskrit) / Mithras (in Ancient Greek) / Mithra (in Latin) was a Cosmogonic and Solar God, protector of the pacts and defender of the peace. Sent by Ahura Mazda, he was born in a cave, wearing a torch in one hand and a dagger in the other hand. With his torch he brought the Light on Earth. He met the Sun and fought with him. And Mithra won. Then he crowned the Sun, being he, Mithra, the real Sun, the Invincible Sun. After that, through a crow, the Sun ordered (?) Mithra to sacrifice the Sacred Bull. Our God didn't want it, but he finally did it in a cave, in company of two teenage Deities : Cautes and cautopates. In the most of the representations of this Cosmogonic scene, Mithra turns his head when he stab the Bull. Then, from the body of the dying Bull, there come out wheat and all the good things for the humanity. For preventing it, Ahriman, the Devil, creates the snakes, the scorpions and the ants, etc. But fortunately, the Moon is here to purify everything. After that, Mithra celebrates with the Sun the Holly Communion done for his birthday, on December 25th. Mithra was also sometimes represented as a Lion, or for better saying as the "Aïôn", the Master of the Time. * * * Even if he's a very antique Indo-European God, Mithra apears for the first time in the "Veda", in India, about 40 centuries ago. Then, after Zarathustra's Reform in Persia, Mithra is mentioned in the "Avesta" as an Amesha Spenta, fighting with the Strenghts of the Good against Ahriman. In Rome, Mithra is mentioned for the first time in Statius' "Thebais". Then, a lot of philosophers, like Porphyry and the Emperor Julian, make us know some elements concerning the Mithraist Liturgies done under the Roman Empire. The Fathers of the Christian Churches, and especially Tertullian, praised the honesty of the Mithraists for saying that the Christians should have to be like them (cf. "De Corona Militis"). When the Christians finally reached the power under the Roman Empire during the 4th century, they destroyed all the antique temples and condemned all the "Pagans" who didn't want to become Christians to the death penalty. By the way, the celebration of Mithra's Birthday, done on December 25th, was so popular that the Church had to christianize it, creating... Christmas ! In the actual Islamic Iran, the antique Mithra's Celebration which was done in Persia in the end of September (the "Mithrakana"), became the "Mehrgân", which is now a feast for the boys and girls who are going to enter in school ! For more informations : * Robert Turcan, "Mithra et le mithriacisme", Les Belles Lettres/Histoire, Paris, 1993. * The works of the American historian Ramsay MacMullen. (The so famous works of Franz Cumont, made in the beginning of the 20th century, are yet too old !). * * * About the fantastic music : "Khilia Myria Kymata", written by the Greek composer Yannis Markopoulos and performed by the great singer from Crete, Nikos Xilouris. Taken from the album "Hrises Epitihies tou Yanni Markopoulou (1970 - 1980)" ("The Golden Hits of Yannis Markopoulos (1970 - 1980)"), Minos/EMI. Listen to another fantastic song written by Yannis Markopoulos : "Malamatenia Logia". It is performed by L. Khalkias, T. Tsanaklidou & Kh. Garganourakis. Taken from the same CD : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xa7n1iuLi8 Video made in Montpellier, France, on December 14, 2008. (In memory of the emperor Julian).

He shed his precious blood to save humanity, was born of a virgin, ascended to Paradise, and was the mediator between Heaven and Earth. His name is Mithras. Mithraism was an ancient religion going back to Vedic tradition that not only became global but competed directly with Christianity during Roman times. We tour the mythology, cosmology and theology of this savior god, and what exactly happened to him. We discover too how this god is making a comeback today in many respects. Astral Guest—Payam Nabarz, author of ‘The Mysteries of Mithras’.
